A quiet mountain valley at daybreak, held in the deep blue-green the artist made his own. Morning mist drifts between overlapping ridges, dissolving their outlines until distance itself becomes the subject. This lithograph belongs to Ten Themes of Sea and Mountains, a suite of ten prints issued in 1977 and drawn from the artist's monumental mural cycle for the Mieido hall of Toshodai-ji temple in Nara, a project that occupied him for more than a decade. The composition derives from the mural Mountain Clouds. The suite was supervised by the artist himself and printed at the Mourlot atelier in Paris, in an edition of 150. This impression is number 78, numbered in pencil at the lower left of the margin, and carries the red seal reading Kai at the lower right. It is presented in a light natural wood frame with a fine reeded inner profile and a beige silk-textured mat, a mounting chosen to let the cool tonality of the sheet breathe.
