Chusaku Oyama - Winter Dawn (冬晨)
A jewel-like nihonga composition by Chusaku Oyama (1922-2009), a Person of Cultural Merit and recipient of the Order of Culture, who served as President of the Nitten and a member of the Japan Art Academy. Titled 'Winter Dawn' (Toshin), the work depicts a camellia branch bearing a single crimson blossom and a young bud, half-buried beneath thick mounds of fresh snow rendered in built-up gofun (powdered shell white). The contrast between the warm vermilion of the flower, the deep green of the foliage and the soft pearl-grey ground evokes the quiet stillness of a winter morning. Painted with mineral pigments on paper in the classical nihonga tradition that Oyama refined under his master Hoshun Yamaguchi, the piece is signed and sealed at the lower right and presented in a gilt frame by Kosonu Tamondo, with the original outer storage box and protective yellow cloth wrapper.
