This refined ink and light-color painting on silk by Keigetsu Matsubayashi (1876-1963) depicts grapevines heavy with luminous fruit. A leading Nanga (literati) master of the twentieth century, Matsubayashi was celebrated for his command of tonal gradation, evoking light, atmosphere, and material substance through subtle ink modulations. Born in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, he studied under Noguchi Yukoku and inherited the lineage of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan. He served on the Art Committee of the Imperial Household and was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1959. His works are held by the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Grape compositions by the artist are represented in museum collections, placing the present work within an important thematic group. Signed 'Keigetsu Sanjin' at lower left with the artist's red intaglio seal.
