Painted in 2000, this monochrome ink-and-acrylic work depicts Mount Huangshan, the UNESCO World Heritage mountain range in Anhui, China, celebrated for its granite peaks rising from a sea of clouds. Dense, saturated ink builds the foreground crag while pale washes dissolve the far summits into drifting mist, capturing the mountain's ever-shifting atmosphere rather than a literal view. The gestural brushwork and restrained tonal range stand in striking contrast to the vivid, celebratory silkscreens for which Hiro Yamagata became internationally known. After his first trip to China in 1998, Yamagata produced works informed by Taoist thought and East Asian landscape traditions, and this painting belongs to that lesser-seen, contemplative side of his practice. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by NATURE BOY INC., which records the reference number Y-752 and identifies the piece as an original, and it is hand-signed and dated by the artist at the lower right.
