Yukika (Snowflakes) depicts a young woman in a vivid blue floral kimono with a pink sash, shielding herself with a delicate pink Japanese paper umbrella (wagasa) as snowflakes drift around her. Painted in traditional Nihonga technique with mineral pigments on Japanese paper, the work exemplifies Terumi Sakane's signature contemporary bijinga style, in which the classical genre of beautiful-woman portraiture is revived through a modern sensibility. The artist captures not only the visual elegance of the figure but also the introspective inner stillness of the modern Japanese woman, set against the timeless poetry of falling snow. Sakane studied Nihonga at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts and is an active member of the Japan Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin), where her recent works have been honored with major prizes including the Japan Art Institute Prize and the Tokyo Governor's Prize.
