Rendered in near-monochrome tones, this work captures a waterfall falling in a single line from a cliff, viewed head-on. A luminous cascade at the center is framed by dark rock walls, heightening the transparency of the water and the force of its descent. Soft ripples spread across the plunge pool as a fine mist rises, evoking the stillness and spiritual presence long associated with waterfalls in Japanese art as symbols of reverence for nature and purification. The artist, Tadao Sato (born 1959 in Nagano Prefecture), is a contemporary painter who began producing original works on nature and wildlife themes in 1980 and later established his distinctive 'Mokusai' wood-painting technique. Drawing on childhood memories of a rich natural world, he seeks to convey the messages he receives from nature in a beautiful, accessible way and to bring viewers a sense of healing.
