Dense, saturated ink builds the foreground crag while pale washes dissolve the far summits into drifting mist, capturing the mountain's ever-shifting atmosphere rather than a literal view. The gestural brushwork and restrained tonal range stand in striking contrast to the vivid, celebratory silkscreens for which Hiro Yamagata became internationally known. After his first trip to China in 1998, Yamagata produced works informed by Taoist thought and East Asian landscape traditions, and this painting belongs to that lesser-seen, contemplative side of his practice.
