A three-storied pagoda rises quietly behind a veil of fresh green maples, its silhouette emerging from deep malachite and ultramarine foliage while a wash of gold animates the sky. Goto, one of the leading Nihonga painters of postwar Japan, based his compositions on direct sketching yet idealized nature with mineral pigments and gold, treating temple architecture as a symbol of Japanese spirituality rather than a mere historical structure. The print faithfully carries over the luminous depth and devotional stillness of his painted work, offering an accessible entry point to a nationally honored master whose paintings are held in major Japanese museums.

Artist

Reiji Matsumoto (Japan, 1938-2023)

Year

2002

Materials

Silkscreen

Size

(H)58.0cm, (W)75.0cm

Framed

(H)72.0cm, (W)87.5cm, (D)4.5cm

Rarity

Limited edition of 250 (No. 120/250)

Medium

Print

Signature

Hand-signed by the artist in pencil at lower right; numbered 120/250 at lower left.

Condition and Authenticity

Faint toning on verso; mat lightly toned; minor frame chips and dust. Issued as a hand-pulled silkscreen, the composition distills Reiji Matsumoto's lifelong themes—the romance of space, the yearning for freedom, and the dignity of finite life—into a single, quietly monumental image. The great ship's wave-motion-gun bow opens toward uncharted space, while its bridge and gun turrets are drawn with the meticulous mechanical detail for which Matsumoto is celebrated. The scene depicts Sanzen-in, the ancient Tendai temple set in Ohara, north of Kyoto. A tiled temple hall glows softly among towering cedars and layers of fresh green maple, while dappled light filters through the deep forest to evoke the crystalline, hushed air unique to Kyoto's northern hills. In the foreground, the playful children, striped costumes and tabby cats that recur throughout Yamagata's work bring warmth and intimacy to the solemn sacred setting, expressing Japanese culture as beauty found within everyday life. Built up from layered screens in more than one hundred colors, the print rewards close viewing with astonishing fine detail. Morning mist drifts between overlapping ridges, dissolving their outlines until distance itself becomes the subject. This lithograph belongs to Ten Themes of Sea and Mountains, a suite of ten prints issued in 1977 and drawn from the artist's monumental mural cycle for the Mieido hall of Toshodai-ji temple in Nara, a project that occupied him for more than a decade. The composition derives from the mural Mountain Clouds. The suite was supervised by the artist himself and printed at the Mourlot atelier in Paris, in an edition of 150. This impression is number 78, numbered in pencil at the lower left of the margin, and carries the red seal reading Kai at the lower right. It is presented in a light natural wood frame with a fine reeded inner profile and a beige silk-textured mat, a mounting chosen to let the cool tonality of the sheet breathe.

Artist

Matazo Kayama (Japan, 1927-2004)

Year

Undated

Materials

Etching on paper

Size

(H)38.0cm, (W)48.0cm

Framed

(H)45.0cm, (W)57.6cm, (D)2.5cm

Rarity

Unique

Medium

Print

Signature

Hand-signed in pencil at lower right margin, annotated H.C. at lower left, with an embossed hexagonal blindstamp on the sheet.

Condition and Authenticity

Overall light toning. A herd of deer is not described so much as woven: bodies, necks and legs dissolve into continuous parallel strokes that behave like tendrils, leaf veins and running water, so that the boundary between animal and plant is deliberately left open. The plate is worked almost entirely in fine hairline engraving, with the open tone of the plate itself carrying the light. Kayama, trained in Kyoto and the son of a Nishijin textile designer, spent the 1960s onward fusing the decorative logic of classical Japanese painting with Western construction and printmaking technique, a direction that earned him the label of a modern Rinpa master. This impression is a hors commerce proof outside the numbered edition, hand-signed in pencil by the artist at the lower right and annotated H.C. at the lower left, with an embossed hexagonal blindstamp pressed into the lower left of the sheet. It is presented in a wooden frame with a cream mat and a gold inner fillet, and retains its plain cardboard outer box and yellow cloth pouch.

Artist

Tsuguharu Foujita (Japan / France, 1886-1968)

Year

2023

Materials

Seven-colour lithograph on BFK Rives white paper, 250 gsm

Size

(H)51.0cm, (W)58.0cm

Framed size

(H)60.5cm, (W)67.8cm, (D)3.3cm

Rarity

Limited edition of 320

Medium

Print

Signature

Stamped signature in black lower right margin; pencil edition number 106/320 with ADAGP embossed dry stamp lower left; matching certificate.

Condition and Authenticity

Sheet in very good condition with clean margins and a fresh impression. He studied their skeletons, their posture and the direction of their coats, and here the sleeping faces and the naturally folded paws show how closely he watched.
